We Don't Wait for Anything Anymore
Lately, I've found myself thinking about the Sunday newspaper.
Not because I miss the news.
I miss the anticipation.
As a kid, I loved reading the Target ad. I'd flip through the pages and circle things I wanted.
Most of the time, I never got any of them, but that wasn't really the point. The fun was in looking.
I loved reading the comics, too. Every Sunday, they were there waiting. The same characters. The same routine.
And then there were Saturday morning cartoons.
You couldn't watch them whenever you wanted. They came on once a week, and somehow that made them feel special.
Looking back, I realize those things had something in common.
They required waiting.
Today, almost everything is available immediately.
We stream what we want when we want it. News arrives by the minute. Shopping happens with a click. Entertainment never stops.
In many ways, that's a gift.
But I sometimes wonder what we've lost along the way.
There was joy in anticipation.
There was excitement in looking forward to something.
There was value in knowing that not everything had to happen right now.
Life feels faster today. Information moves faster. Trends move faster. Even our attention seems to move faster.
Sometimes things change before we've had a chance to fully enjoy what's right in front of us.
Maybe that's why I find myself thinking about Sunday comics and Saturday morning cartoons.
Not because I want to go backward.
But because they remind me that some of life's pleasures were never about having more.
They were about having something worth waiting for.
